Rivercross, City of Bridges
Twelve wards on the river Vey, where Fray goods come down from the hills to be weighed, sold and argued over. Here is what a stranger should know before crossing.
The Paper Stair
A stepped street of paper shops, printers and clerks, and home to the Chronicle. Hollin Brask’s old assay house stands halfway up, waiting for someone to light it again.
Lamp Row
Inns and boarding houses where an upper window often holds a lamp left dark for someone not yet home. Most tables keep one bowl more than they need.
The Anvil Houses
The dwarven assay houses mark every Fray good with three lines: what it is, what it does, and what it cost. People read the first two. Read the third.
Three Bridges
Listener’s Bridge belongs to Mother Sib’s eel sellers, Sheaf Bridge to the Tallowjacks, and under Oldking Bridge, the Crows. When they fall out, the Drowned Purse settles it.
The Underarches
A night market in the vaults beneath the bridge approaches. You can buy anything there except an assay mark, and that too if you know which lantern to stand under.
The Frays
Places where the world has worn through. The Crossers’ Guild sends people in, and porters carry what comes out. Three stacked stones by a Fray path mean someone turned back. Leave them standing.
The Nine Watches
The day has nine watches, each kept by a god. Begin repairs in Orvek’s watch, make promises at dawn, and stay indoors in the Lean Watch if you can.
Coin of the River
Prices are posted under the gilded sheaf of the River Council.
